An Optimist’s View of America in the 21st Century

Many predict America’s decline as irreversible, our glory days as the unquestioned superpower behind us.  The rise of China, India, and Russia, in large part due to our own national fudiciary irresponsponsibility and self-loathment, seem to validate this feeling.  It is nice to find a glass half-full view as Victor Davis Hanson over at Real Clear Politics reminds us of the inherent greatness of the political and capitalistic institutions our country was founded on.  They have stood the test of time in comparison to those of the so-called rising new superpowers.  I thought it fitting to post his entire article here as it makes some excellent points and reminds us of the genius of the founding fathers.

Victor Davis Hanson

The current debt, recession, wars and political infighting have depressed Americans into thinking they soon will be supplanted by more vigorous rivals abroad. Yet this is an American fear as old as it is improbable.

In the 1930s, the Great Depression supposedly marked the end of freewheeling American capitalism. The 1950s were caricatured as a period of mindless American conformity, McCarthyism and obsequious company men.

By the late 1960s, the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., along with the Vietnam War, had prompted a hippie counterculture that purportedly was going to replace a toxic American establishment. Oil shocks, gas lines, Watergate and new rust belts were said to be symptomatic of a post-industrial, has-been America of the 1970s.

At the same time, other nations, we were typically told, were doing far better.

In the late 1940s, with the rise of a postwar Soviet Union that had crushed Hitler’s Wehrmacht on the eastern front during World War II, communism promised a New Man as it swept through Eastern Europe.

Mao Zedong took power in China and inspired communist revolutions from North Korea to Cuba. Statist central planning was going to replace the unfairness and inefficiency of Western-style capitalism. Yet just a half-century later, communism had either imploded or had been superseded in most of the world.

By the early 1980s, Japan‘s state capitalism and emphasis on the group rather than the individual was being touted as the ideal balance between the public and private sectors. Japan Inc. continually outpaced the growth of the American economy. Then, in the 1990s, a real estate bubble and a lack of fiscal transparency led to a collapse of property prices and a general recession. A shrinking and aging Japanese population, led by a secretive government, has been struggling ever since to recover the old magic.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the European Union was hailed as the proper Western paradigm of the future. The euro soared over the dollar. Europe practiced a sophisticated “soft power,” while American cowboyism was derided for getting us into wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Civilized cradle-to-grave benefits were contrasted with the frontier, every-man-for-himself American system.

Now Europe limps from crisis to crisis. Its undemocratic union, when coupled with socialist entitlements, is proving unsustainable. Symptoms of the ossified European system appear in everything from a shrinking population and a growing atheism to an inability to integrate Muslim immigrants or field a credible military.

As we enter this new decade, we are currently being lectured that China is soon to be the global colossus. Its economy is now second only to America’s, but with a far faster rate of growth and budget surpluses rather than debt. Few seem to mention that China’s mounting social tensions, mercantilism, environmental degradation and state bosses belong more to a 19th than 21st century nation.

Two symptoms of all this doom and gloom are constant over the decades. First, America typically goes through periodic bouts of neurotic self-doubt, only to wake up and snap out of it. Indeed, indebted Americans are already bracing for fiscal restraint and parsimony as an antidote to past profligacy.

Second, decline is relative and does not occur in a vacuum. As Western economic and scientific values ripple out from Europe and the United States, it is understandable that developing countries like China, India or Brazil can catapult right into the 21st century. But that said, national strength is still found in the underlying hardiness of the patient — its demography, culture and institutions — rather than occasional symptoms of ill health.

In that regard, America integrates immigrants and assimilates races and ethnicities in a way Europe cannot. Russia, China and Japan are simply not culturally equipped to deal with millions who do not look Slavic, Chinese or Japanese. The Islamic world cannot ensure religious parity to Christians, Jews or Hindus — or political equality to women.

The American Constitution has been tested over 223 years. In contrast, China, the European Union, India, Japan, Russia and South Korea do not have constitutional pedigrees of much more than 60 years. The last time Americans killed each other in large numbers was nearly a century and a half ago; most of our rivals have seen millions of their own destroyed in civil strife and internecine warring just this century.

In short, a nation’s health is not gauged by bouts of recession and self-doubt, but by its time-honored political, economic, military and social foundations. A temporarily ill-seeming America is nevertheless still growing, stable, multiethnic, transparent, individualistic, self-critical and meritocratic; almost all of its apparently healthy rivals in fact are not.

Red Skelton on ‘The Pledge of Allegiance’

I found this video clip of Red Skelton in 1969 on network TV after seeing this story posted on the Drudge Report about a school in Massachusetts sending permission slips home regarding student participation in reciting ‘The Pledge’.  The clip now seems to be prophetic and also a sad reminder of how far we have declined as a nation when schools now either ask for a parent’s permission for or allow students to opt out all together from participation in a basic patriotic act.

A word from Pam

HI, PATRIOTS:
Many thanks to all who braved the cold weather last Tuesday night and attended our annual Christmas party, plus monthly meeting. To everyone who brought food, etc.–THANKS. There were ample dishes, and all delicious.  Thanks to the ‘book swappers’, too. I can’t wait to start reading mine.

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Bob McDaniel who was sworn in as the new GC Coroner. He was sworn in Tuesday afternoon, and I have some photos attached.

A big THANK YOU to Steve Wood who brought us the story of his razor-close race for GC Judge-Executive and the following re-canvass and re-count. Bud Clancy and Joe Taylor also added their insights into the procedure, as all were involved in the decision-making and outcome. We are so sorry, Steve, that you lost, but you ran a great race, and had many fellow Republicans
to stand with you during the recount process.

More news…Rick VanMeter, Cong. Davis’s field rep for our area, and dear friend, has been promoted to Press Secretary for Geoff in Washington DC! CONGRATULATIONS, RICK!!! We are so sorry to see you go, but so proud of this great advancement. Cong. Davis’s trust in your extraordinary talent is well-founded, and we salute you in this career move.

We are glad to welcome Kyle Knarr to our party. Kyle is a student at NKY and helped Brian Linder campaign this fall. Kyle…WELCOME!  We also welcome Charlotte Schmidt, a new GC School board member, and fellow Tea Party patriot, to our group. WELCOME, CHARLOTTE.

One last thing…our annual LINCOLN DAY DINNER is Friday, April 22, 2011, and that is also Good Friday. I don’t know if this will cause a problem for anyone, but if it does, please let me know. A few years ago, we decided to hold our LDD on the 4th Friday of April, so that is the reason for the date.

As we wind down this year, I look back and see so many positive events and changes taking place within our party. We are inching ever closer to gaining more ground within our political system, and we have the momentum on our side. You all worked very hard this year, and for that…THANK YOU!!! Many of you worked sacrificially…spending money & time you could have used elsewhere, in supporting our candidates, making multiple trips to Washington, Frankfort, driving our candidates door-to-door as they campaigned, making hundreds of phone calls, being a poll worker…the list goes on and on. It takes a lot of work…continual, non-stop work to make/keep our government into what it should be. So to you all…THANK YOU…and GOD BLESS YOU!

GOD BLESS YOU & AMERICA, TOO!

“A date which will live in infamy”

69 years ago today marked America’s entry into World War II.  Many of us who were not around then simply acknowledge it as another historical date of importance in our country’s history.  Those who were understand its significance as America entered into a global conflict to end tyranny on a scale many today could not imagine.  As someone who has had the privilege of visiting Pearl Harbor and seeing for myself the names on the walls of the USS Arizona Memorial I cannot stress the importance of taking a moment today to remember those who paid the ultimate price in protecting our nation.  If you come into contact with someone who has served in the military please thank them for their service.

My post-election 2 cents

By now many of you have been inundated with countless opinions explaining why the Democrats were trounced on November 2nd.  Most objective pundits say (correctly I think) it was a repudiation of President Obama and his party’s policies; a vote against Democrats, not for Republicans.  The bad taste everyone had in their mouths for the Bush Administration was THE major reason the President and his party were given control of Washington in 2008.  They ignored this as fact and chose to believe in a mandate of their own making.  How quickly things have changed for them in two years.  Their failure to learn from others mistakes has led to a severe case of ‘buyer’s remorse’ among the electorate.  So much so it handed back overwhelming control of the House and pickups in the Senate despite continued Repub unpopularity in the polls.

Two years in it is clear the Obama Administration is trying to fundamentally alter the country in ways not seen since FDR.  Voters paid attention and said STOP at the first opportunity.  From ObamaCare to the bailouts to the handling of foreign policy and neglect of the economy…..the last two years have been a dizzyingly frustrating ride for most Americans.  Hopefully the election result is a sign of an awakening to the detrimental policies causing the decline of our nation as a global superpower.

It is time for people to realize we no longer have two diametrically opposed political parties.  Since the end of the Reagan Administration Repubs have moved closer to the Dems belief in a statist, utopian ideology while only paying lip service to conservative principles.  With help from the Bush dynasty they have established additional government bureaucracies such as the DHS, enacted liberty-infringing legislation such as  ‘The Patriot Act’ and ‘No Child Left Behind’, increased the federal deficit, and engaged in nation-building exercises in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I believe the election just passed will mark a prolonged rejection of central planning and the beginning of a new realization of the integral importance of individual liberty and limited government in building a prosperous nation.  History proves statist ideologies do not make people’s lives better.  They only lead to more despotic, authoritarian means and the eventual collapse of civilizations.  I believe many Americans are starting to embrace this truth.

A Turkey Day Lesson

This pic is for the ladies.  If you have the chance please read the man in the pool’s column about the “Lost Lesson of Thanksgiving”.  Made me realize “the more things change the more they stay the same” as our country today faces the same ideological struggle as the Pilgrims did almost 400 years ago.

Happy Turkey Day!

A message from Grant GOP Chair Pam Mann

HI, PATRIOTS:
What an exciting day we had Tuesday! Many of you worked the polls…like me…and that made for a very long, busy day. But our efforts were well-rewarded in seeing two of our four local candidates sweep into victories. Congratulations to BRIAN LINDER on his smashing re-election as magistrate, 2nd district, and to BOB MC DANIEL for his win over an entrenched incumbent to become Grant Co.’s first GOP coroner. Bob’s victory proves that a loss on your first try just means you have had a practice run for a successful second attempt. Again…CONGRATULATIONS, BRIAN AND BOB!!!

And our sincere regrets to STEVE WOOD & HARVEY PERLEBERG in their close, heart-breaking losses. Steve had an up-hill battle against our 3-term Judge-Exec. Darrell Link, which is never easy, and came so squeaky close, leading most of the night until the final totals were read. And Harvey had an entire political family out-spending, out-working him, yet he collected a strong number of votes.

To all our candidates…THANK YOU FOR BATTLES WELL-FOUGHT. YOU MADE US ALL PROUD.

As soon as I can, I will FW the election results.

This next Tuesday, Nov. 9, is our monthly GOP meeting, @ 7:00 pm @ the Williamstown City Building. I have invited ALL OUR POLL WORKERS AND CANDIDATES TO ATTEND, AND I WILL BE PROVIDING A LITTLE RECEPTION AT THE BEGINNING OF OUR MEETING TO THANK THEM FOR THEIR COMMITMENT.
I will also have all the election results for us to analyze and discuss.

So we have a ‘really big show’ next Tuesday night. Please make plans to attend…to thank our candidates, as well as our poll workers.

GOD BLESS YOU & AMERICA, TOO!

PAM

Local election results

Congrats to our GOP winners yesterday and many thanks to those who came up a little short but made our party proud by running competitive campaigns.  The Grant County GOP has made great strides during this election cycle.  Our candidates and Pam Mann’s leadership have worked very hard to change the tide towards conservative local government.  Hats off to them!

Grant County Election Preview

Here are clips of our candidates as they sat down with Williamstown Cable’s Tony Penick and Dale Caskey to talk about their candidacies for the upcoming election.

Monthly GOP meeting is tonight!

We are coming down the stretch of what will be a historic mid-term election.  Pam Mann says there is still a lot of work to do.  We invite all those interested to join us tonight at the Williamstown City Building at 7:00pm.  On the agenda:

1)  Location for Victory Party.

2)  GOTV prep.

3)  Phone calls…surveys can be done from your own phone.

4)  Distribution of remaining signage Rand Paul & Geoff Davis

Also, Congratulations are in order for Bud Clancy, our election officer.  He has filled all poll worker slots with REPUBLICANS!!!! This is a first for Grant County.  THANK YOU, BUD!
